Join your personal tour host on a very special music experience tour to Graz, the capital of Styria, a region in the southern part of AUSTRIA.
The "Styriarte" Festival was founded in 1985 to bend close ties between the famous conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt and his home town of Graz. His artistic endeavors made Harnoncourt a world-renowned star in the world of music.
The extraordinarily dynamic Chamber Orchestra of Europe brilliantly led by Nikolaus Harnoncourt has become one the of the favorite ensembles of the Styriarte Festival. Pioneering performers of Early Music, for instance Jordi Savall, Quatuor Mosaiques, Armonico Tributo Austria and Il Giardino Armonico, have also long become regular guests of the Styriarte Festival.
One of the distinctive features of the styriarte Festival are the gorgeous settings in which the concerts take place. The exceptionally well preserved historical city center of the Styrian capital with its renowned historical sites and halls is a magnificent venue for the Styriarte Festival.

Wanted: Europa, The Phoenician Princess:

Europa was gathering flowers with her friends near the seashore, when suddenly a white bull sprung from the waves, so stunning and beautiful that Europa climbed onto his back and let him carry her from the slopes of Lebanon eastwards across the sea. The bull was Zeus, the father of the gods, disguised as a bull, who had fallen for Europa's beauty and to whom she now readily succumbed. In Crete, Zeus went to shore with his booty and fathered the future king Minos: the mythical hour of birth of our continent.

"Wanted: Europe" is the ambiguous motto under which the styriarte 2007 sets out on a search for the abducted princess of a mythical past, while at the same time strives to explore the continent of Europe and its changing identity. Time and again, it has been music as a universal lingua franca that has forged new ties to mend the torn fabric of Europe.

Ties across the rifts between faith and enlightenment, and ties between Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Beethoven created an eternal monument to Napoleon, the revolutionary, as well as to the God of Christianity with his Mass in C major and the oratorio "Christ on the Mount of Olives", conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt. In their programs, Jordi Savall and Vladimir Ivanoff try to mend the ties between the different Mediterranean cultures.

The change of seasons leaves its mark on people in Europe. Not only Vivaldi with his "Quattro Stagioni", but also Claude le Jeune, the French master of Renaissance music, with his "Quatre Saisons" and Joseph Haydn with his "The Seasons" oratorio bear witness to this. Nikolaus Harnoncourt directs this song of praise to diligence and luxuriantly blossoming fields with a select cast of musicians.

To talk about Europe also means to talk about nations. Traveling musicians like the Mozarts distinctly felt and portrayed national characteristics. And national styles often set the tone in music itself. After some time, however, the tables turned again: the madrigal and string quartet were not confined to national borders, and Renaissance and classical music turned out to be supranational styles. And in Baroque music, Bach also knew no bounds and preferred his "mixed taste".

When in the political struggle for national identity differentiation was the order of the day, music has more than once undermined politics. And even today, music still helps to open up new horizons, questions old prejudices and serves to prove that Europe has not become a petrified and static construct, but that it is able to re-invent itself again and again - as a vision, potential, and hope.

The History of Graz

5000 years ago there was only a steep rocky hill by the river Mur. This period of time is referred to as the Neolithic Period or New Stone Age nowadays and that hill is called the Schlossberg.
The year 1128 is distinctive in Graz¹s history. It marks the first reference to the city in a historic document. In 2003 the Grazers celebrated the 875th anniversary of this important point in their history. Only 250 years later, in 1379, Graz was designated the capital of Inner Austria, an area comprising Styria, Carinthia, Krain, Inner Istria and Trieste. As such, Graz became residence of the Hapsburgs until 1619.

In the decades to come, Italian architects and craftsmen would shape the city with their skills. Graz became a mighty stronghold of the Holy Roman Empire against the threats from the southeast. During the Napoleonic Wars, the last walls of the castle fell without ever having been stormed. The citizens of Graz, however, had bought the Glockenturm, the distinctive clock tower that overlooks Graz's main square as well as the Uhrturm, the bell tower that crowns the Schlossberg. This "insurance" cost them 2987 gulden and 11 kreutzer, which would come to about 87,000 euros today. These two buildings have become the city's landmarks.

Since that time the city has distinguished itself primarily in the worlds of science, culture and technology. Today, Graz is the capital of the province of Styria. With about a quarter of a million inhabitants, Graz is Austria's second largest city.

A Melting Pot of Cultures

The city lies at an intersection of several European cultures. Romanic, Slavic, Magyar and Alpine-Germanic influences have mixed here to form a uniquely distinctive character. Wandering through the old town, which happens to be one of the biggest historically intact architectural ensembles of the German-speaking world, this character is illustrated in buildings ranging in style from Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Historicism up to Art Nouveau. On December 1, 1999, this singular city center, which has been only very lightly contrasted with modern architecture, became a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. This award was a great honor for Graz, but at the same time it is also a great challenge and a mandate to continue efforts in further preserving the old town. Graz understands this multicultural tradition, which has characterized the city for decades, as the fundament for its cultural and political identity. Today, Graz continues to be a place of international encounter and intercultural and inter-religious dialogue.

An Eye-Catcher and a Pioneer

The Styrian capital is also renown for its exemplary ecological efforts. Innovative projects like ökoprofit and Thermoprofit, referring respectively to the city's ecologic and energy conservation efforts, are very successful and have already been adopted by many other international cities.

2003 was one of the most significant years in our history. Graz was named "Cultural Capital of Europe" by the EU Ministries of Culture. With a vital and colorful cultural program, Graz managed to attract visitors from all over the world and generate an ongoing resonance. As a cultural capital, Graz has claimed a significant place on the map and today is mentioned in the same breath as Vienna and Salzburg.
